halfords scuff repiar kit

anyone had any experiences using this kit ?

Have a little chip out of my bumper and was thinking of doing the job myself. Asked at a local garage they said they dont touch up bumpers as they could possibly start cracking and would end up doing the whole bumper costing £230 kit only costs £20. + the paint.

What I was wondeirng is if you respray a small part of a bumper or any part how easy is it to spot ... does it stand ?

Not sure if its my best idea but no harm in asking opions.

hmmm might be a better idea getting an old bumper from a scrap yard and doing a test run ...

I am hugely skeptical of what you have been told! If that were true, there would have been a large warning notice in red on the Halfords repair pack. The product appears to be an epoxy resin. That is for any common garden plastic bumper, not one off special. If that turns out to be the "wrong type of snow" and there is no warning then the manufacturer would be in deep trouble.

I would go ahead and DIY. But if you don't feel comfortable, you should make enquiry preferably in writing to Halfords technical section. It's £20 versus £200.

Repair such as this requires skills. A practice run before the real thing is a good idea. The kit has enough for 4-5 repairs.

The results are s**te.

They're lying. My local bodyshop fixed a 2 foot split and resprayed it in metallic for £100.

It is dead easy to spot unless you're using the proper spraying gear along with experience.

Or better going to a local bodyshop and asking them the price. You may find it costs you £50 or less.

I had a plastic bumper repaired around 4 yrs ago, after a mild scrape with a carpark bolard. It had a combination of the gash (not crack) filled with some plastic weld, then the area filled, sanded and then painted.

Initially the repair was great, but after about 4 months the filler area began to craze and loose adhesion to the plastic; due no doubt to the different expansion / flexibility co-efficients of the filler and plastic bumper. It wasnt pretty.

One of the current cars has suffered a similar collishion with a breeze block on the front corner which has 'stretched / ruffled up' a small area. In this case i'll be replacing the whole bumper. Luckily OE bumpers are just the skin (the absorbtion block is undamaged underneath) and come ready painted and are just a bolt on job.

The insurance will be paying, as that is why I pay FC with protected no claims.

Hmmm thanks for this info all,

Think I'll ask around at a few different bodyshops. I'll have a go on an old bumper myself and see how that turns out. If its poor then I'll leave it to the professionals. :-)

Cheers

Check Yellow Pages for 'smart repair' companies. We have a bloke come to us for minor repairs and paint to plastic bumpers and he does an excellent job. He knows his limitations and recommends a new bumper cover or professional job if he cannot do it. I don't know what retail price is but I would expect under =A3100.

If your car is metallic, I can guarantee the repair will stick out like a sore thumb if you do it yourself.
