Heavy power steering when stationary/low revs

Just started happening: turned into the square at low speed and the steering went very heavy. When stationary on (normal) idle speed, it feels like there isn't any power steering at all. Increase the revs slightly and power steering kicks in.

Prime suspects?

Thanks, Rob.

Slipping belt on the pump? I have had something similar on another car when driving through a deep puddle which I can only assume is belt slip.

Fluid level, belt broken (assuming it ain't got electric PAS), dead rack.

Could be - lot of slush and water around over Christmas. Will have a look if it stops raining.

Will check fluid in the light tomorrow. Wouldn't a broken belt mean it doesn't work at all?

Cheers, Rob.

Sorry, yes, missed the bit about it cutting in when revved.

Not fluid level so maybe belt slip or faulty pump :-(

Actually, although the power steering does kick back in on revs, it's still sluggish.

Time to book it in I think.

Rob.

The pump has failed and it's going to cost a painful £250 which will bring the bill up to about £400 inc. VAT & labour.

I really have had enough with Renault... I've never had so many problems with a car and this one was new!

The pump has failed after a mere 40,000 miles/4 years. Is this normal??

That Hyundai 5 year warranty is looking more and more attractive.

Cheers, Rob.

Might be worth checking out a steering specialist - most do re-con pumps, and will have much lower labour rates than a dealer. I'd expect about half that amount - unless it's a very difficult pump to change.

FWIW, I paid approx 150 exchange for a pump.
