Honda ictdi

I have an Accord Tourer 2.2 ictdi, had the car for about 7 months now, a few weeks ago the heater coil display light came on whilst driving under acceleration, the car went into "limp mode" after a minute or so of steady away driving it went off. A friend who is an RAC patrolman plugged into his diagnostic computer and the fault was a camshaft position sensor fault, we renewed the sensor £85.00+ vat, cleared the fault code and tried it, the heater coil light again came on again and car in limp mode. Diagnosed it again, this time it showed a P1065 fault code, which I understand is a Honda fault code. The car starts and runs fine until you accelerate maybe to 3000 rpm then the engine faulters and if you persist it will go into limp mode. I am going to put it in for a major sevice pretty soon when finances allow, just wondered if anyone has any experience of similar. The fuel filter does not look like it has been changed recently and when I spoke to the main dealer they said some problems had been experienced if fuel filters were not changed regularly....Could it possibly be a fuel flow fault, was my recent thought. Any help appreciated.

Change the fuel filter & check the earthing to the ECU if you don't want to pay Honda for a fault code read out.

This illustrates why you shouldn't trust error codes - they do NOT always show the real problem or the cause. I would be asking him for the £85+VAT if he give an incorrect diagnosis. Not much good if he can only read fault codes without knowing how to make a proper diagnosis.

So did you Google it, or join any of the Honda forums to find out more? Mr RAC should be able to tell you what it means otherwise he isn't much use!

That is because your MAF sensor has gone - you need to look at it closely.

No need for a major service, it will be cheaper to get a Honda dealer to fix it rather than keep listening to "oh let's try this" from your mate. His apparent lack of knowledge will cost you a fortune. he doesn't really know what's wrong with it, he is guessing. Terrible when he doesn't know what codes can point to!

Only if the filter is blocked - in which case Mr RAC would get a few different error codes pointing to that. The filters don't need to be changed that often, you would notice poor performance over time until it packed in. The error code will not say "change the filter", it might show a few other things such as injector concerns or emission warnings.

Nothing to do with "earthing", that is usually shouted as a guess. If the ECU wasn't "earthed" - or connected to the negative supply it wouldn't work. If the connection was bad or a high resistance it would show immediately as the car wouldn't start or run. It isn't really an issue with a Honda. The fuel filter change will make no difference. Learn how a diesel turbo engine works! Stop the guessing and save money. Split the engine in to sections, look at what each one does - then try to work out why an error code would point to one thing, but be caused by surrounding parts.

P1065 is a generic mass air flow meter OBD code.

Only codes in the region of P0000-0999 are generic codes. Anything above are manufacturer specific codes, along with any beginning with C or U.

A blocked/restricted fuel filter on modern diesels can cause the vehicle to go into limp home mode. Particuarly on Delphi and Denso systems that use a flow control valve on the vacuum side of the high pressure pump. The ECU will realise that it's not seeing enough pressure for a given valve opening, and enter into limp home mode to protect the high pressure pump.

I had an AA man tell me it was the engine management system on my B reg

1.2 Nova that was playing up. It was a basic-as-they-come non-injection engine with a carb. The only electronic bits on the engine were the ignition switch and coil.

If he hadn't also said he was retiring in a few weeks because he 'couldn't keep up with all the new technology' I'd have made more of a fuss.

That one turned out to be a dodgy earth strap, BTW, sometimes a good connection, sometimes bad. And as I've seen in many of the electronic gadgets I've worked on (and built from scratch) the errors you get with intermittent connections are far from logical to diagnose.

Hi John

I know you probably don't have your car any longer but was wondering if you ever got to t= he bottom of your problem. We are having exactly the same problem and we can't afford t= o be throwing money away. The other problem we are having is that when we are accelerat= ing in lower gear, not only does it go into 'limp mode', the whole enging cuts out with t= he engine management light on and the glow plug coil flashing. Have to stop at the side= of the road for a few minutes before the engine will start again. Not very handy if you'= ve just tried to overtake. Getting dangerous. Just given Honda =C2=A3100 for nothin= g. They updated the ECU apparently. Looks like a long haul. Hope you got to the bottom o= f it and can let me know.

There is a known problem with turbo's on some of the earlier Civic i-ctdi's which will give a p1236 and p1237. Honda have upgraded the warranty to 5yrs for the turbo, so speak with your dealer about it. Otherwise it is a BIG bill, sorry.

Wrap head with brown packing paper soaked with vinegar. Lie down, somewhere in the shade.

Good luck, compliments to Jill!
