Just about to do my first service on this model (daughter-in- law) car

72k miles

plugs oil and air filters oil change

Possibly cvt flud change

Appears that htis model has timing chain rather than belt so no need to
touch that I assume

Looks straighforward enough

any gotchas I should be aware of?

Just follow the book and replace and check what's necessary.  keep an
eye out for unusual items. oil leaks, worn rubbed cables, split boots etc.

Check the brakes pads etc.

Brake fluid change if no recent evidence. Trans fluid is due at 72K
according to Autodata.

I'm guessing you will do brake/suspension/steering/wheel bearing checks
as a matter of course.

Re: Honda jazz 52 plate service

MOT was only 4 weeks ago passed with one advisory slight movement in
nearside strut upper mounting bush

I certainly would not rely on an MOT as evidence that my brakes will be
OK for the next 12,000 miles...

Re: Honda jazz 52 plate service

The garage I use for MOT normally tells me if pads etc are anywhere near
needing replacement

I have used this station for 40 years (family business) and take our 6 cars
annually for MOT

Obviously I will check eveything over but don't anticipate needing to do
much more that the bits I planned

But sod's law is always in force especially on Bank Holiday weekends so we
will see

Well, OK, but no dismantling occurs during an MOT, so there are some
things that are impossible to see.

and it is a normal part of a thorough service to actually take the calipers
off, clean out, inspect and re-lube as needed.  Something I have often found
while doing this is that pad material may be coming away from the backing
metal.

I look after one of these for a girl I work with,

Hers is a 2004 model with the 1.4 engine.

It has 8 plugs! which was the first gotcha for me (and seemingly the
last person didnt check either)

The other thing that was knackered on hers was a 2 thin metal coolant
pipes that zig zag across the front of the engine. They get all the
salty shitty motorway spray and corrode. I caught them just in time as i
dismantled them they fell apart in my hands.

That said the car I look after is now on 120k and has done most of that
on the motorway, often in winter. Other than that i love it to bits, and
often drive it when carrying stuff around/going on hols in preferance to
my focus as the inside is HUGE!

Timing chain looks and sounds bonny enough, but as with any, they can
and do die, results as you expect. If it happens on this one it'll be
new engine and gearbox time as it has been abused and at one point not
serviced for at least 40k. And it has the 1st gear whine. (but at over
100k out of extened warrenty)

I have done all round pads and disks all easy enough, back more
expensive than the front. As far as i can see all original suspension
parts, and all are showing no signs of wear yet with no evident knocks.
Quite suprised me as it is driven enthusiastically over 12 miles of
country roads and each day!
