Immobiliser Key: - How does it work?

On a Renault Kangoo, I have intermittent starting problems, I found after reading the manual, that it won't start when the immoboliser panel indication light flashes after switching on the ignition key, using the "plip" key. After switching off and on for a few attempts, the light finally stops flashing and stays on as it should, I am then able to start and the light goes out According to the handbook, when this condition occurs, the other "non-plip" key supplied with the vehicle, should be used and repairs are required by the dealer. I have used this key and it works at every starting attempt i.e. the light works correctly and I can start. My question is: -

  1. How is the plip key {and the other non-plip key), sensed by the ignition switch?
  2. Are there any repairs I can carry out or do I need to replace the plip key? Jaymack

The non-plip key as you call it, still has a tranponder moulded into it. The trasnponder is a small microchip that contains a code, which is read by the transceiver mounted around/near the ignition barrel.

It's quite common for Renault van keys to die, in the exact way you describe. You're going to need a new key, and to get it programmed.
