Info wtd: Escort Brakes Binding

a friend of mine has a 93 Ford Escort Estate and every now and again the back brakes bind on and eventually free off again whilst driving.

He has replaced all the back brake shoes and free'd off the self adjusters does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, he says it mainly occurs after harder than usual braking?

I have noticed under the bonnet on the passenger side inner wing there are two canisters one in line with the rear brake pipe and another in line with the front brake pipe. Whate are these canisters and what do they do? Could they be the cause of the problem?

I hope someone can assist it is driving him barmy.

the two canisters are the pressure limiters for the back brakes, neither will be in the front brake circuit , one will come from the front part of the master cylinder, the other from the rear.

likely cause of binding brakes is an overtight handbrake cable. check by depressing the relay lever touch pins, there should be almost no movement on either, if only one has a lot of movement then that side has a problem, probably a faulty handbrake cable or rusted relay lever in the brake.

other possible causes are seized wheel cylinders (less common these days) faulty brake flexibles, faulty master cylinder, over adjusted brake switch or stiff pedal/linkage, faulty servo, crushed brake pipes, wrong master cylinder cap, very old brake fluid (unlikely).
