Is this multi meter a good buy for car use?

Manual Ranging Digital Multimeter w

This mid-sized handheld multimeter is really packed with functions at a great price. Among all the other features this little gem has a good sized 31/2 digit LCD display and a data hold option. Ideal for hobbyist, workshop, DIYers and home applications.

Would the above do for use on a car? Would need to know how to use it first. What about those Gunsons ones, maybe come with better instructions on how to use it on a car? Still this one is only 4.99 at moment with test leads included.

that one is quite capable. I use a similarly priced one from maplin (got one in the car and one at home as they were 2 for 1 when I got it). most of the time all you'll be doing with a car is checking dc voltage and small current flow as well as resistance. not difficult to use at all.

More or less any multimeter (except the very cheapest of analogue) will do for car use as the thing it'll be used for most is checking for the presence of 12V on wires, possibly measuring volts drop across a lead (starter motor cable for example) and probably continuity checks.

Fine, you'll want a set of crocodile clips to go with it :-)

I use the wee yellow digital multimeters which Maplin have on special offer at two for a fiver every so often - it's almost cheaper to buy a new pair than to replace the battery when it goes flat. However, for many things in cars an analogue meter is better - it's much easier to read a needle than a digital display when the thing measured is fluctuating - so I have an analogue voltmeter and ammeter as well.

Go up in price a bit, and digital ones have an analogue indication as well because of this. And a min/max/average reading too.

A dwell function is well worth having - this will show functioning of the LT side of any ignition system - and injector operation too.

A temperature probe is also worth having, as is frequency measurement.

For car use, make sure it also has a 10 amp scale.

I go with the consensus I bought the Maplin (2 for 1 offer as well) and the small crocodile clips are ideal to plug one probe into leaving you a free hand while you search for a live or earth Derek

The Maplin one I have has these features, quite useful too. I have a portable 'scope as well, though I rarely need that, I find the DMM is enough most of the time. :)

Grin, mine is rated to 20A, but the leads they supplied with it are fused at 10A...
