Is this stupid or sensible?

Before the Scrote goes to the breaker's yard I want the half tank of petrol out of it and into SWMBO's car.

The obvious thing to do is syphon it out into a can and pour it in.

I can't see any problem in disconnecting the fuel line of the scrote somewhere ahead of the fuel pump, jubilee clipping a pipe to it and pumping it out using scrote power via a filter in the line so I don't get crud from the scrote tank?

I'm aware that there'll be petrol in the line so a completely clean oil drip tray would be under that and the pipe would be ready assembled and ready to shove straight onto the disconnected line.

Anyone see an obvious problem with doing it this way?

If by 'ahead' of the pump you mean between the tank and the pump it won't work. If you mean between the pump and the carb/throttle body according to the age of the escort, it will work, but many modern pumps will just pump for a second or three if the line is open. In this case it would be best to put a T in the line, then you can run the engine and close off the pipe to your can as necessary to keep the feed to the engine.

what you do is find the fuel pump power feed find out the fuel in side into the engine bay wire up the pump to the battery via a switch disconnect the fuel in pipe position the pipe for the fuel in into a gallon can switch the pump on wait till it's full turn off repeat until empty

that's why you put a switch in the way ;)

I think I can manage well ventilated, fairly long pipe so the fuel exit is nowhere in the vicinity of the battery or switch and to be honest, given the safety implications and the work involved, I may as well just syphon it out.
