Kia Sedona 2.9 - how to spot CRDI vs TDI

I almost bought a nov01 2.9 Sedona SE this afters but withdrew on the last minute because I could not tell if the engine was a 'common rail CRDi' (

143bhp ) version.

The car model was a phase II version with the bigger grill. I understood that the earlier models called LX,SX,GSX all had the TD (125bhp ) engine , but the phase II which were post Nov 01 called L,LE,SE were the 2.9 CRDI versions. Parsker website seems to confirm this.

The problem is, when I looked on the engine, nothing on the plastic covers said CDRi, in fact all I called find was "TDI double overhead cam 16V"

The seller did advertise it as a CRDI so he's now flapping because he doesn't know what the hell it is. We actually rang the local dealers and their mechanics looked ar a nearly new Sedona and an older one. The nearly new one definately said CRDi on the cover and the old one said TDI.

If I could get some pointers that could satisfy me once an for all then I can either go for it or just move on.

EG if it said 16V, would this indicate is was a later version ? perhaps the original one was just 8V

Has any got any pics of the different engine bays so I can make a judgement?

Thx

16V 2.9 engine car? not unless it's got a porch badge on it the differences are most likely to be in the fuelling rather than anything else but the thing you need to ask for first is when the crdi engines were first introduced if it's after nov 01 then you would have most certainly bought the older version

You're going to have to remove the plastic top cover and look at the fuelling- if you see an injector pump with one pipe per cylinder feeding an injector then its the earlier model.

If you see a smaller shorter pump where the injector pump would go, with one fatter pipe leading to either a circular or long 'rail', and from here 4 individual pipes leading to the cylinder head, then its the common railer.

I've actually got an email today from Kia UK head office confirming the chassis number and the fact its a CRDi engine.

I've put a deposit on the car and made a gentlemans agreement that I go to see it tomorrow with a bag of tools to remove the cover. Assuming I can confirm its got no piping and I can see multiplugs on all the injectors then we'll close the deal.

My other car is a Laguna 1.9 dTI and the car this Sedona is replacing is my Citroen Synergie 1.9TD. Both these cars are mechanical injection so I know what you mean about the piping on the back of the fuel pump
