Loose door lock

On my ol' Rover Metro 96 the door lock has come loose, the outside lock where the key goes in.

I've taken the back of the door off and there's some kind of round piece of pressed metal that appears to hold it in. I can put the metal back in position, but it doesn't stick.

Is there some kind of clip that goes in there to keep it in place?

Thanks

Yes. Shaped like a squared off U with a bent up tab at the open ends, slightly curved all over. It'll be loose in the bottom of the door.

Sounds like it should have a spring clip. Like a bent flat washer with a 'U' shaped slot, that sits against the round piece of metal you mention. It slides into slots in the casting that goes through the door, holding it firmly in place. Until it falls out of course. :-) Mike.

Doh! I hate it when that happens. Makes me look like one of those posters that apparently try to appear knowledgable by simply rephrasing answers that have already been given. Mike.

Are these sold in normal shops, or do I have to go down to the Rover dealership and beg them for one?

Thanks

As Guy said. You'll probably find it right at the bottom of the door. Where the drain holes are. Otherwise yes. You should easily be able to buy another. Mike.

Yes I just realised it should be there.

Neither, just fish it out of the bottom of the door.

Well.... Tonight the key got stuck in the lock, I had to pull it out with force, the lock's come out of the door, and whatever metal was holding it in has fallen to the bottom as well.

I foresee fun and games tomorrow trying to piece this damn thing back together through the few spaces available, Rover conveniently hid most of this behind metal.

If anyone's got a diagram of the lock mechanism in this car, could they please let me know. I've got a manual on disk, but it doesn't seem to include this.

Times like these I really wish I'd bought a Toyota.

Thanks
