Mercedes A-Class A160 check engine light + misfire help?

First post here, please treat me gently!

I've been asked to look at a petrol A-Class Mercedes (A160) for a friend.

The check engine light is on and it's running very rough, feels like only 3 cylinders.

I've had a quick shufty under the bonnet and I'm not even sure how to get to, or even see the plugs! (Bit of a modern car for me).

There's no Haynes BOL available, but I did find a "Peter Russek" manual which I have ordered.

I've had a quick google but nothing obvious has come up as to where to check first. Does anyone have a suggestion where I can start while I'm waiting for the manual?

TIA

the plugs on these are a pain in the arse to get too, the way the engine is designed they are near enough at the bottom of the engine, it has coil over's (coils per plug) but are contained in one unit which is held on with torxs bolts, to be honest if you have a misfire and engine management light on your best bet would be to get it hooked up to some diagnostic equipment.

If the engine is upside down, no wonder the early ones were prone to roll :-)

Thanks for that, it's what I suspected.

That leads me to another question, is there a decent, affordable diagnostic system out there that's any good? Would something like this

we have various diagnostic equipment at work but im not familiar with that system, might be worth ringing around a Merc specialist and see how much to put the vehicle on their diagnostic you might save a few bob.

If anyone has any experience of PC-based car diagnostic systems that don't cost the earth I'd be interested to hear. I'd like to get one not just for this A-Class as I'm sure it will be useful for future problems on other cars.
