Meriva A 1.4 2005 EGR valve.

Sisters Meriva's EML is illuminated. I can't remember what the fault code is (I had to write it on my hand last time I saw her), but when I looked it up, it sounded like there was a problem with the EGR valve. I will, of course, double-check it before doing much else.

Like many other things on this car, it seems inordinately difficult to change (I recently did the starter motor and flasher relay on it, and they seemed to be made perversely hard to get at), so I just want to do it once - replace it, rather than clean it out and see what happens.

But I see that there are blanking plates and EGR simulators for sale. Are these a better option? Doesn't it affect the readings at MOT time?

Thanks.

Before you get too carried away replacing with the EGR valve itself... is this a twinport engine? If so, have the intake off and clean it out, checking the change over valves are movable and not disintegrated first. Very common for them to coke up and the code is always EGR insufficient flow because the intake is blocked solid. It will be showing lacklustre low speed running too.

Obviously look at the EGR path from exhaust, through valve to intake as well..

Yes, it's a twinport. Can you examine the changeover valves without removing it? I don't want to empty the coolant more times than I have to, because I always seem to end up spilling loads of it.

No. Whole intake has to come off.

Okay, well if you reckon it's very likely to be cleanable, I'll try it.
