mk4 gold negative battery terminal \ starting issues

I was wondering if anyone has noticed that on the mk4 golf the negative terminal connector on the battery doesn't quite sit properly ?

I think think is modding the battery box to accomodate the cable somehow so it sits square. Maybe by dremeling a bit away or driling a big hole and thredding it through.

Just wondered if anyone has noticed this. I was always wondering if this has been the cause of a few starting problems I have had on my 01 1.6 car. Sometimes just kicks up a fuss on starting a good 4.5 tries sometimes is required and firstly suspected the battery which was changed and is working good. Also had a halfords test on it which was fine.

I can't visually see anything on the battery connectors broken bent snapped damaged (alot of stuff is in thick plastic cablings)

I have cleaned the battery terminals as well when fitting new batery.

Could it be the starter or alternator or something else ?

Any advice welcomed as am not as experienced as I think I am with me little tool bag :)

Although VAG COM has saved me a fortune and been an education!!

thanks :)

Sorry that was mean't to read MK4 golf not gold :)

Have sorted the negative terminal connector which was not fitted correctly and is now sitting flush and is tight. Still the starting problem persists.

Any ideas on what I can try or information needed to help answer this problem ?

Thanks

What *exactly* does it do or not do when it 'kicks up a fuss'?

And how can you try 4.5 times (or is it that you give up halfway through the

5th try? :-)

Hmm good question sir :) perhaps a forward slash would have been more appropriate.

The fifth one starts as a try then when it fires becomes a success. It isn't a success for the first few revolutions until it catches, hence half.
