mk4 golf rear brake washer

I'm about to change the rear sezied calipers on my mk4 golf (1.6 8v 1999 petrol). I'm having trouble locating the washer that fits between the caliper and brake hose side of things. I was told on a forum the size I need is 15mm o/d, 10.1mm i/d and 1.2 mm thick.

Tried vw they said there system is not even showing it. The parts guy very unsurely said if I buy the entire hose for £18.63 it might be on that but I have to buy it to find out. Got to love them.

Also no one knows if if its a aluminium or copper or if its a crush washer.

Haynes has no reference to it.

Also when changing the rear caliper do you need to clamp the hose or just switch it over to the new caliper quickly and bleed ?

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas about this washer or if them have done this job and know the ins and outs

cheers

the washers should come with the caliper, which should also have a new bolt, usually they would be copper washers and they can usually be re-used. provided they don't leak when you pressure test, they will be fine. clamping the hose is the usual method, but you can just ensure the master cylinder is full and work steadily to swap it, there will only be a slow dribble from the open end, you should have more than a minute or so and you can always put finger and thumb on the banjo to stop the flow. an assistant could also keep the master cylinder topped up to give you more time.

It's worth heating a used copper washer up to red hot in a gas flame (your kitchen hob will do) and then plunging it into water. That will anneal it so it is soft, as when new.

Worth keeping an eye on places like Lidl - they sometimes have copper washer assortment kits. Or Screwfix and ToolStation, etc. Before you desperately need one. ;-)

If I can have a chassis number I*ll look up the details and see where it comes in the spare parts listings. .email good. There are several different varieties of brakes fitted to the Mk4.

They are copper washers very thin type more like a shim.

Thin, thick, squash, copper, aluminium, dowty. As long as it seals.
