Mondeo Heated Windscseen idle control

1.8 mk1 GLX Mondeo petrol

The system seems to cope with the heater and lights being on, but if I then switch the heated front screen on, whilst the engine is still cold, then it stalls at idle - unless the accelerator is held slightly open. When the engine has fully warmed up, it's ok. ISTR that the switch is supposed to tell the ECU to increase the idle revs when the heated screen is on, is this the case? If so, what's likely to be broken...?

Or is it just likely to be a duff battery?

You are right. There is a Heated Front Windscreen Control Switch which sometimes fails. Have a look here :-

...and click on "idle problems" and then "Heated Front Windscreen Control Switch" in the faultfinder chart.
