Mondeo idle - Pulse Air Injection?

1994 1.8 Petrol Mondeo with a lumpy idle - seems to increase then immediately decrease revs (constant looping) approx. twice a second, a sort of rythmic hunting. Revs only increase by 2/300RPM - not too noticeable on tacho but definitely very audible..

Also has a beauty of a metallic 'rattle' between 2250-2750RPM which, after reading

AirInjection, has made me dread spending more money... So far I have changed the Idle air Speed Control Valve and the EGR valve (diagnostics machine said EGR fault but diagnostics machine's expensive!) with no difference.

Has anyone heard the noise when the Pulse Air Injection's faulty on these engines? Does it sound similar to a 'rattling' exhaust or maybe a heat shield? Does it rattle when hot AND cold and can it make the noise only between certain revs?

Thanks for any answers - have already spent too much on this car in comparison to it's value, but I need to get it running/sounding ok before I can sell it...

It's worth checking the state of the HT leads & the plugs before worrying about the expensive bits

Bearing in mind that Ford OEM plugs were =A375 a set (+VAT), and the leads= =20 were pretty much the same, 5 years ago when mine went :-)

Pete.

I bought NGK plats for my Zetec Mondy, £15-ish for 4. The original "Motorcraft" leads were less than £40 for the set from my main dealer. Looks like Ford prices are dropping ;)

Blinkin heck! Surely you meant £75 for the plugs *and* the leads from Ford? If not then your dealer is taking you for a ride- my local dealer does the leads for around £30+vat and the plugs for £20+vat.- i;'ve had several sets for various cars.

Thanks JK - it was the rubber T-piece which had a hole right on the 'cross' of the 'T'.

Cost £3.50 for a new one and the engine idles perfectly again.

You were stuffed, i paid £25ish for a set of platinum tipped, cables were around the £40 mark.
