mondeo locks

Hi,

I am having problems with two of my four door locks not working. When I use the key fob to lock the doors, the rear near side door will not lock or unlock. I have to lock and unlock this from the inside.

The front off side door is temperamental. Sometimes it will lock and unlock first time, other times (especially when locking) it can take several attempts or I give up and use the key.

I can imagine one lock might fail but is it coincidence that two should fail together?

This was an intermittent problem that has been going on for some weeks but it was too cold outside to take the door apart to see what was going wrong. Now it is a bit warmer I am ready to have a go at fixing this. I do wonder whether it is temperature related as I think it may play up more when it is cold.

Thanks, Stephen.

Before taking anything apart I would replace the battery in the key fob. This will rule out one possible problem. A low battery can do strange things.

Also on some Fords there are two door locking modes.

On my Focus there is a driver only door unlock on first press or a all doors on first press. In the first mode a double press is required to unlock the other 3 doors.

On my Focus, to switch modes press and hold the lock and unlock at the same time for a few seconds - the car responds by flashing the indicators. Repeat to switch back. I've found with drivers only unlock that sometimes when I had double pressed to unlock other doors locking seemed to get out-of-sequence.

Also the sensitivity of the key fob can reduce and give an intermittent lock/unlock. This can be easily (re)calibrated back in the car. Again on my Focus this involves putting the key in the ignition lock switching the key to start position (without turning over the engine) and turning off again - repeat this 4 times in quick succession. The car responds with a bong sound and you have 30 seconds to press the lock button on your fob AND the lock buttons on all the other other key fobs you have. You need to re-calibrate all your fobs at the same time.

Your car may/will have similar functionality but slightly different in-car sequences to recalibrate fobs.

It looks like the Focus and Mondeo have the same unlock modes and fob unlock recalibration sequences

probably just stiff mechanisms, pull the relevant door cards off and liberally dose all the relevant bits with lube.
