Mondeo suspension clunk ideas?

Sorry this is a bit long, but I'm trying to diagnose a fairly heavy "clunk" from the offside front wheel of my mk1 mondeo mostly under drive takeup and low speed braking to a stop...

It almost "feels" like a loose hub or wheel - except that it isn't ;) FWIW this was mentioned at the vehicle's MOT 3 weeks ago and garage couldn't find anything amiss - nor can I either when it's in the air...

The only time I can see anything amiss is when the wheels are straight ahead, with the weight on the road and handbrake on. Then there appears to be excessive rotational free play in the o/s road wheel (but *not* in the n/s wheel) which can be rotated clockwise 1/4 turn hard, by hand. Then I hear (and feel) a metallic clunk that suggests CV joint, but on full lock in either direction, nothing. Nor can I feel any play in the joint. Goes without saying that it doesn't happen with the footbrake applied :)

Is it likely to be the cv joint or am I missing a weird gearbox/diff fault?

PS Engine mounts, all the suspension joints and strut top mounts have been checked and the n/s doesn't exhibit the symptom.

I know it is obvious, but have you tried to tighten the hub nut?
