Mondeo td turbo problem

Mondeo 1.8td endura de.

Second hand engine fitted recently. Lots of black smoke on acceleration, ok at constant speed. No oil loss so must be unburnt diesel. Looked at it today. There is a linkage to the exhaust manifold which is free to move with a spanner which diverts exhaust gas to the turbo. When operated by hand the black smoke disappears. It seems to be operated by a spring return valve on the turbo line. This does not move no matter what revs. The turbo spins and produces a fair amount of pressure.

Is this valve likely to be u/s or could it be knackered turbo, or leaky pipes (the pipe clips are a bit iffy).

Anyone had similar ?

Thanks in advance

Its called the EGR valve. Some you can remove and clean, others you can't. Make sure it doesn't have one of those crappy diesel tuning boxes - all they do is flood the engine with diesel and cause problems with clouds of black smoke. You can always tell when you are behind someone destroying their engine with a diesel tuning box.
