Mondeo Timing Belt

My Mondeo is just due for the timing belt change (90,000 or 10 years) and its done 90,450 and just a month over 10 years old. Bit skint and would like to put it off for a month or two (2500 miles). Just wondered if they are prone to going on this model or is it a only a tiny chance I'm taking going over the recommened miles. I know there must be a margin, but wondered if there is a history to these engines going early or lasting well past 90,000 or not.

Also what should I expect in hours of labour?

FWIW I never heard of a 1.8 Zetec motor snapping it's belt. I know we ran ours from 22k up to 150k without a belt change. I am *NOT* recommending you do the same... but i expect another month won't hurt.

Collapsing tensioners & pulleys however... There again if you don't rev the balls off it, dump the clutch or rely on engine braking for a month or two & stop if it sounds odd immediately you'll very probably get away with it.

Of course the deciding factor is if you can cope if it does break.

You should expect to pay around £160 all in. Make sure that they fit a pulley kit as well as the cambelt because its usually the pulley/tensioner that fails.

I bought my timing belt kit (for a 2.0 petrol Mk.1) from here - about £60 all in, pulleys and all.

It's a bit of a fiddle to fit because there isn't much room at that end of the engine, my friendly mechanic undid the engine mount, lifted one side of the car on a jack, put another jack underneath the engine, then let the car down - forcing the engine up *some*, just enough to get to all the necessary bits.

Probably officially an hour if they know what they're doing? I don't know what the trade guides say about it. Or if mine is the same as yours - mine has just done 90,000 as well but it's a quite low mileage 1996 model...
