mondeo timng belt

I have a 98 2litre (zetec e) mondeo. It appears the cam belt tensioner has given up. Noisily limped car home. This morning it wont start, seems to have no compression and the belt is loose. Can I assume head damage (expensive), or will a repair to tensioner be ok.

Thanks RD

Suck it and see. My Focus 1.8 petrol did the same thing and a new belt and tensioner resurrected it. The same in the past with a Peugeot 309

1.6 petrol.

Good luck!
