multipla problem

I`ve got a multipla 1.9jtd , or rather my other half has for the kids. no jokes please, we`ve heard them all !! LOL its really a great fun car, recently we`ve noticed a deterioration in the performance of the car. it used to be quite a fast and nippy car,(believe it or not). There seems to be no guts there anymore, more often than not, in second gear, when pulling away after a turn I can floor the pedal, and theres nothing for a few seconds (3-5) secs, even then it doesn`t take off like it used to. This is not a problem for my wife, as she says she doesn`t need the power, however I feel that running the car when its clearly underperforming, will do more harm than good and will eventually lead to breakdown when we need it most. I daren`t take it to fiat, they wanted £280 for a basic service, they will probably want a leg this time. Incidentally the car has been serviced recently although not by fiat. has anyone got any ideas what might be causing the problem. mike

Replace the Air Flow Meter..... common as hell on those

Fuel filter, Maf, there's several things it could be. It's unlikely to damage anything else thoughif it is the MAF

Could be anything, and unless the management fault lamp is lit it will be hard to track down- however if the performance is constantly flat and there is no excess smoke then the first port of call would be the air mass meter. Its not very easy to check the output from this without driving the car. They tend to drift out of spec with age and dont give the ecu a true load reading- so it doesnt supply enough fuel and thus performace is flat.

Same fault as with VAG's Tdi AMM which does exactly the same after about 60k miles.

both the fuel filter and the air filter have been changed recently on a service visit, the car has only done 16000miles, I think the biggest problem is she only drives it about 4miles to work and back, it cant help it stop starting, needs a good blast a bit more often I think.

Now you tell us. So give it a good blast up the motorway holding high revs and high load for abit and see if it helps... Some injector cleaner at double strength at the same time will help.. Tim..

I know I have a totally different car (Rover 45 2.0 TDi) but I had the same thing happen. I thought it was my imagination, but when it went into a local dealer on an unrelated matter, they reported that the Manifold Air Pressure sensor had failed.

They replaced it, and it's as good as new now.

Hope this helps.
