New used car-ABS light on/cost of timing belt?

I've just bought a new/used car- 200 x reg(Vauxhall (Opal) Zafira 2.0 Di

16v Elegance), originally a Dutch made 'import'

The ABS light is on all the time - all other lights go out after few seconds. Does this mean the ABS isn't working? If not - how much to fix it? Also - not sure if timing belt or cam belts been changed. I know it should have been as it's done 94k, but if I needed to change them - what cost am I looking at?

Really important I have reliable car as I've got 3 kids and I don't want to be ripped off by mechanics. Thanks

ABS light could be pretty much anything. Only option is either a dealer, or an local independant with suitable diagnsotic kit.

The 2.0Di doesn't have a timing belt. It's chain driven. Some of them do use a bit of oil, so make sure you reguarly check it.

P'raps these are things you should have enquired about *prior* to buying the vehicle?

Timing belt's probably about 250 quid from a local independant.

Yes.

If not - how much to fix

Depends what the fault is. The most likely cause is a faulty wheel sensor. Reasonably cheap to replace. But it could be a wiring fault, or even a faulty ABS unit. That would be expensive to replace.

I have no idea on that engine, but if you don't know when it was changed, I suggest you have it replaced anyway, along with any tensioners if you want to be sure it will not let you down. Mike.
