Nissan 200SX air-conditioning

Hi, I own an 'M' registration Nissan 200 - one of the last of the vintage with the flippy top headlights.

The air condition has gone on the fritz, blowing out warmish air in the last week or so. Has anyone got any suggestions as to the simple checks that I could run before calling the Nissan garage and having my financial teeth extracted.

Alternatively, what might I expect to get on the car. It's only done some 50k miles and is in really good nick?

Cheers for any thoughts,

Martin

On some systems there is a sight glass on part of the AC system such that you can see the coolant circulating. That might be a good place to start. Of course if it has suddenly stopped working it may be a fuse. Has the cooling effect diminished over the summer? If so the refrigerant may have leaked. Alternatively is it climate control and is now warming you up cos it's colder outside?

Go to an independant A/C specialist and not Nissan. It will be _far_ cheaper.

Many thanks - and to Malc too.

The air-con man comes on Sunday. He suggested that, since I hadn't been regassed since the car was new, that the system had more or less completely run out of gas and had therefore shut itself down.

Cheers,

It takes R12 which is now banned. The replacement gas is R134a. There will be a reduction in cooling if this gas is used.

Download the corrected version of the workshop manual, unlike the rip offs on E bay this one comes with all the pages sorted into correct order, right way up and missing ones added. www h-dev co uk/manuals (put dots in spaces)

Check the magnetic clutch on the compressor under the power steering pump is working. If not then it's either fuse or low on pressure. The sight glass is on the sliver drier bottle in front of the condenser which is on the front of the slam panel. Page HA-26 of the manual gives the test procedure.
