My Primera (2.0 petrol 1998) has started making a slight hissing noise like an exhaust leak-but from the engine area (worse when from cold start). I took it to a Nationwide garage and he thinks the cylinder head gasket is leaking very slightly and to a) get a compression test b) check the water for compression also. Plan to do this but I'm slightly doubtful since it drives reasonably and doesn't lose any water (I use it daily up and down the motorway). Surely if the head gasket leaked at all it would soon be a major fault and run rough? The temp gauge stays just below middle (normal). Sorry for the vagueness-just want to confirm if this might be the head gasket (I had it skimmed, new gasket in Jan 2005!)
