Nissan Primera / Silicone Thermostat Gasket

I've ordered the thermostat for my Primera, I asked if I needed a gasket, was told I needed to use Silicone sealant. Hrm. Not liking the sound of that. I've never done that before. Bit worried now.

I've got some sealant... Had a choice between Clear or Black... went for Black, figuring I could see it easier... Dunno if there's a special type of silicone sealant, i just picked up the only tube of silicone in Halfords I could find.

Erm, is there a technique to this? Splodge the stuff on then attach the housing straight away, or, wait for it to dry first or something? My initial reaction is to put it back together straight away, but the cautionary chap inside says, hrm, what if the silicone shrinks as it sets?

nothing unusal about that, we use black at work, but make sure both mating surfaces are dry & fix straight away, but dont put huge amounts on, as putting on too much you might find the excess might find its way into the cooling system, ive seen a few over the years where the silicone has jammed the thermostat.

So... clean... apply to, I dunno, the "cap" of the thermostat housing, fix, tighten, refill...
