Old beemer -- wierd starting problem.

My old 730i with 112000 miles on it has a wierd starting problem, which is more noticeable during the colder weather. Crank the starter and it fires ... so i release the starter. But it hasn't started. If i do the same again but hold the key, it fires, throws the starter out, then as the engine hasn't started, it "dings" back in (bad). If i just apply 2 inches of throttle it will start, running on 2 or 3 cylinders for a second or two, then revs up as if nothing has happened. I started thinking it was an air leak, but all hoses are good. Then i tried "flicking" the starter for a second (to allow the fuel pump to run for three seconds pressurising the system) before trying to start ... problem still occurs. The spark plugs are new, as well as rotor and cap.

Would a course of medication be advised (such as injector cleaner). Could the idle mixture (currently at 6 percent) affect cold starting??

Try checking the cold start sensor/bleed/injector etc. They usually start ok from cold without assistance in warm weather, but not in cold. The engine turns over until enough unburnt fuel has accumulated, then fires once or twice using up the excess fuel, but then it's too weak for normal running.
