OT: Caravans

Given the number of caravans (with attached cars) I see pointing the wrong way on the motorway, has anyone got any stats on how dangerous they are? I presume they must be bloody terrible as they can only account for a couple of percent of all vehicle miles at the absolute maximum...

Careful, Uno-Hoo'll accuse you of imagining them.

Doki presented the following explanation :

I can only assume you must be the cause of them becoming pointed the wrong way, because I so rarely see any and I do more than enough mileage.

As they're a bit like towing a 16-20 ft sail behond your car, and weigh

1200-1500Kgs (single axle; double axles are longer and heavier), its not surprising that they do get into trouble from time to time. They're especially vulnerable going downhill and when overtaken by large vehicles - buses etc.

Anti-yaw technology is starting to come in, which detects a snaking caravan and applies the caravan brakes to bring it back into line, but this is only fitted to a very few caravans at the moment - hopefully it will quickly become standard fit.

I do a thousand miles a week just commuting at the moment. This week I've seen one facing the wrong way on the M5, and another nearly lose it on the M42...
