On Thursday, my '98 Punto 1.2 water overheat light came on as I was waiting
in traffic. The Punto does not have a temp guage, but only has a warning
light.

Anyway, managed to pull over onto a grass verge as soon as the light came on
(and when I could move out of the way of a tree). Found the fault to be the
fan not cutting in.

Can someone advise me whether this overheat may have damaged the head gasket
and/or head??

If you pulled over and turned the engine off soon after the light came on,
it's unlikely to have caused any damage. The light is designed to tell you
before, not after, damage happens.

The normal ways that damage happens is if you ignore the gauge/light or if
you tip cold water into a hot head (try putting a hot dish straight from the
oven into a bowl of cold water to see what happens!). I doubt you did the
latter as the water level will have been normal.

Puntos seem to have a small cooling capacity, I remember after a
particularly fast A1 blast followed by a sudden stop (very sudden for the
guy whose car was across both carriageways) seeing three overheated puntos
in the queue.

It may not only be the fan at fault, though.

We suffered intermittent overheating problems in our Cinq (same engine)
for months - was finally tracked down to a knackered water pump.

Part was only about £40 and a few hours of my amateur spannering to
replace that and the cambelt.

Thanks for all replies. It does seem that I was lucky this time. Took the
car for a blast up the M6 today and hasn't lost any coolant or hasn't lost
performance.

I will get the water pump checked thought
