P Reg Ford Fiesta

I bought this car a couple of months ago and have had nothing but trouble, my main concern now is the clutch, about a month ago my clutch in the car completely went meaning that I couldn't put it in gear or anything so the guy I bought it off kindly came for it and said he was taking it to a garage to get it repaired for me. After many calls to him I eventually get it back 2 weeks later apparantley repaired, 3 days ago whilst out driving it goes on me once again, I phone the fella back who tells me that he will go and collect it and take it back to the garage again, when he goes to pick it up on his truck he phones me to tell me that it is working fine but he will still take it to get it looked at, I get another call today telling me that it is still working fine, he obviously doesn't believe what I am saying. Does anyone know what could be wrong with my car as I'm at my wits end and just want this problem sorted? Thanks Debbs x

The automatic clutch cable adjuster's jumping, just change it (for an inordinate amount of swearing upside down just)

What other problems have you had? they may be related. What exact model and engine type and size?

Depending on the exact model/engine means there are two sorts of clutch operation.: either hydraulic or mechanical.

Was the fault that suddenly the clutch pedal could slam to the floor with little resistance, possibly with a crunchy noise first? If so then the auto adjuster in the mechanical cable system needs to be replaced (a very common fault).

if your fiesta has a hydraulically operated clutch, it may be that there is a leak (if so then it must have been topped up again to start working again) or there is a fault with the master cylinder, slave cylinder fault is possible but less likely.

get a mechanic to drive it for a while, that is what I would do, if it came to me for repair.

Thats what the garage are supposed to be doing, driving it around to see if they can spot the fault, what i'm not so sure about tho is that this guy is supposed to have completely replaced the clutch i.e by taking the gears out (i think), but i would have thought that if this had been done then there wouldn't be any problems...???

the clutch release mechanism and the clutch are separate bits, replacing one does not fix the other, in fact it may accelerate a fault on the other bit!

A P-reg is much more likely to be Mark 4 than Mark 3. Mark 4 Fiestas have hydrualic clutches. Mark 3s have a cable.

Ooh yes - my mark 3 did that twice in the time I had it. It's a complete sod to replace too.

Debbs - the auto adjusting in this arrangement is at the pedal end of the clutch cable, not the engine end.

But I'm pretty sure you have a Mark 5 Fiesta at P reg. I've only ever seen one P reg Mark 3 but lots of N reg Mark 4s.
