Can brake pipes be painted to stop the rusting. Can't find any previous posts about this. Is it considered more cost effective to change them rather than protect them ?

Well, if it did work, it would only really be effective if you painted the pipes when they were brand new, and if you were really that bothered about corrosion then you would probably be better off fitting copper-nickel brake pipes in the first place.
Paint - No
Waxoil - Yes
Most places supply copper/alloy based piping which doesn't corrode. Fit them and simply smear them with vaseline or grease.
Protecting them is OK providing a rust protective is used like Waxoyl or Dinitrol. Paint wouldn't be very effective protection for fitted pipes. If you intend to keep the car, when pipes do need replacing, replace them with cupro/nickel ones, which do not corrode. Mike.

But not plain copper, which is crap.
And potentially lethal. Mike.
