Peugeot 405 fuel problem

Solex Z 34 carb. has two solenoids: 1 fast idle , 2 float chamber breather. According to Haynes manual the fast idle solenoid is only fitted on the fuel injection models and is wired to the injection control unit. The breather solenoid is wired to pin 3 on the ignion coil. On my model both are wired together and connected to the coil. When it was working properly the engine would fast idle until the auto choke warmed up and fully opened. Now it does not fast idle and until it warms up the engine cuts out. It is also using a hell of a lot of fuel and even when it is fully warmed and ticking over, it still cuts out if I disconnect the idle solenoid. Any thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated. Mike...Lincoln.

Right, firstly both the chamber vent and the cut off soloniod should receive power with igntion on- as you say taken from the coil. This is how it is meant to work- Ford used a similar system.

Secondly your cutting out is invaribly due to a split vacuum hose, split fast idle diaphragm for the fast idle, faulty choke pull down, or sticking choke or blocked jets.

As you say its using alot of fuel, i'd check carefully the operation of the auto choke first.
