Pinking - Again

OK this seems really weird and I'm not sure what to do.

Car : V reg 899cc Fiat Seicento SX 35,000 miles

I've had pinking since I bought the car half a year ago mainly when the engine is under load but sometimes when cruising at 30mph in 4th gear. i replaced the ignitio leads about 10 days ago and on the first drive I probably heard the noise about once, it seemed to be cured almost completely. One week later and the pinking's back to how it was. Any ideas why? The weather wasn't anything unusual and I've always had the pinking (apart from a few miles after the leads were changed. It seemed to take about 10 miles to get back to normal (pinking).

Pinking is pre ignition. I wonder if you are using the cheaper fuel and it should be on a higher octane rating. Surprised you say it pinks when cruising- the tinkling sound of pre ignition is usually only heard when under load. Whatever, it needs the ignition timing checking. (maybe you can't,-it may be set by the management system). Years ago it was the signal for a decoke. DaveK.

It should run on 'normal' petrol. I usually use BP but sometimes Shell, I've only used supermarket stuff once.

It is under load when cruising on some roads. It's usually when the road's badly maintained (bumpy) or with a bend, this puts it under a slight bit of load.

Can't change the timing :-(
