Preparing hydraulic lifters before they go back into head

When I come to put the lifters back into the head I am working on, what do I have to do to prepare them?

Whatever has to be done, I'd like to make sure it is done and done properly, as I don't fancy having to take the timing belt, pulleys and cams off just because one lifter isn't playing ball!

While I'm on the subject, is there any other preparation required on the cam bearings and lobes?

Cheers, Andy.

obviously make sure its all clean, bearings, cam lobes ect I just give a liberal coating of engine oil, nothing in particular you have to do with the lifters, you will find though when you start it up it will rattle at the top for a while, while the lifters fill with oil, I tend to disconnect the coil lead and spin it over a few times, just to get the oil back up to the top. oh and make sure the cam wheels go back on the right cam, might seem obvious but we had one dragged into the workshop where the guy had refitted it all back to front !!!!

The message from "reg" contains these words:

Sometimes smearing SAE90 gear oil on bits as you reassemble them works better simply 'cos it's stickier and doesn't all come off before you get the bits in place. There's only a few spoonfuls so it won't affect the bulk of the oil once you fill up before starting the engine.

I store them in a clean jar full of the correct oil.

Drained ones can take quite some time to work properly again accompanied by lots of noise.

You can buy special assembly oil. But whether it's actually needed or not I'm not sure. I just give the whole lot a good soaking in engine oil.
