Pressure wash my car engine ??

Is it feasible for me to pressure wash to clean my engine still in the car.

Can I use a cold pressure washer ??? or does have to be hot.

What precautions do I need take, as I suppose you have to cover up the electrics ??

I guess steam would be better, and some sort of gunk loosening compound.

Yes and no in that order.

Ah, well, that sort of depends on the car. Some are well sealed and don't mind a bit of a squirt provided you don't deliberately soak the ignition system. Others keel over on a damp day. Take your pick.

Yes.

Cold pressure washer would take longer. Get a can of Gunk and put it in a dquirty bottle and liberally cover the engine.

Electrics should be OK as long as you go careful around them. You need to be wearing waterproofs and DEFINITELY goggles.

It'll go absolutely everywhere so make sure you're doing it in an area that you can get covered in spots of muck.

Just done this to mine as the water/oil heat exchanger has decided to start spurting - needed to clean the area to identify the problem. Got some engine degreasant in a window-cleaner-spray bottle and covered everything. Left it for 10 mins, came back and sprayed with the karcher thingy. fairly good results but not bare metal in all places as id have liked. Certainly clean enough to work on though. Lots and LOTS of black globular oily bits on drive - took hours to sweep/wash away and is probably a deadly sin in the environmental health books.

Tailored to BMWs, but with points that should be pertinent to all engines:-
