Priming Diesel Filter - help

Anyone with experience of priming/purging a Purflux or Bosch type glass bowl diesel filter? Type mid-1980s probably fitted to Peugeot 504/505/604 diesel cars/pick-ups. Mine's on a Peugeot van but type was probably in widespread use.

Haynes manual reads that I should:

1.Open needle valve, pump with priming lever on top until fuel runs clear from overflow tube, then close needle valve.

That bit's OK, except that this seems to empty fuel from the bowl slowly.

  1. Open Air-bleed screw and pump again on lever until resistance is felt, then close air-bleed.

I don't get any resistance after about 1 minute or more of pumping. Any tricks I can use?

I have changed the filter, system has not run out of fuel, and I have filled the glass bowl with fuel before re-fitting it.

PS - are there any specialist Diesel sites? I didn't find any newsgroups for 'diesel'.

Replace the assembly with a universal primer/filter assy.... available from good motor-factors... they tend to use the small Lucas type fuel filter...... this unit is similar to the ones used on Diesel escorts etc.... about £15 complete.
