Give it some welly. Foot flat down on the floorboards in third gear for a couple of minutes then slow to a crawl, repeat to taste, then give it a long high speed run. Its usually caused by slow running in traffic, you get a build up of grot that needs clearing.
Check the air filter. The change interval is too long at 40k.
Some smoke is normal though.
Find a friendly soul via a VW forum and get VCDS/VAG-COM on it. You might also want to try unplugging the MAF. If performance doesn't get much worse, it's fecked.
Tried that
I'll try it, the filter was changed last service (4 months & 15k ago)
Hiya mate, might be a bit like the Disco, try the EGR valve, if it has one. My Renault Laguna coughs and farts and splutters when the EGR gets clogged, usually a month after she's been driving it to work and back ..;) Doesn't take much for it to stop working correctly, and the Laguna's a tad more awkward to get at than the Landy,YMMV for a VW .. ;)
15k should be OK: Official interval is 40k, which made my Fabia VRS smoke and took the edge off performance. The Leon I have now has had 20 or even 10k changes, and doesn't smoke noticeably. The filter's cheap, after all.
BTW, if you're anywhere W Mids, I can be the friendly soul with VCDS.
