Punto clutch change

Hi,

My mum has just been charged =A3320 for a clutch change on an R reg Fiat Punto 1.1, by a local garage.

It seems to me to be a tad expensive.

What do you folks think?

My old 740 Volvo cost £210 last time for a genuine clutch, the previous clutch lasted 130,000 so I expected the same life out of the new one. It did

200,000 then I scrapped the car for other reasons (rust). That may be a fair price for that car, but seems expensive to me.

Ellesmere Port Clutch Centre- £220 for a Xantia hdi (and that's a heavy lump). Did it in four hours too. They would charge no more than £150 for your little motor. DaveK.

Just had a look at Shop4Parts. They want £46 for the kit for a 1400cc (1100 not listed). Valeo-original equipment too. Should have shopped around. DaveK

Or even ask the garage that did the work what they would charge?

For an independent replacement, that sounds expensive to me. That's not much off what a main dealer would charge for that job.

yep that's about what a Fiat main agent would charge.

You hear some horror stories about stripped bellhousing bolts not being refitted, oil leaks afterwards etc. Cheap clutch jobs are risky. £320 is around main dealer price, probably lower than a London main dealer would charge. If the garage are very good it's OK.

As a comparison a clutch for my MX-5 is around £250 fitted at a specialist; but the engine can stay in the car because it's RWD. Your Punto will probably need the whole lot taking out.

Hi - thanks for the replies.

It was a local garage we have used for years.

As for getting a quote. - I find it's very difficult to get any kind of fixed price for any work.

- the usual answer is it depends on how long it takes.
