Re Re engine wont heat up

Hi all carried out some experiments...

Cardboard in front of rad while car stationary and run for a while engine heated up and up, to start with fan was freewheeling as proved by the "dangerous method" then it locked up Volvo roar and now need some new welding gloves ;-) when cooled down fan started freewheeling again, anyway the fan seems to work... To get the temp gauge to mid norm position i.e. 3 o'clock stat elbow temp about 100 deg C ? does this seem right ? as in the Haynes book of words it says the stat should be 88 deg C if this is the case surely it would not get to temp, or am I missing something !!!!!!!

Pinto thermostat goes with the spring end to the engine, condition of the housing 'ledge' is important so that water doesn't leak around the edges. The thermostat shouldn't open till 88 or 92 degrees, at which point the temp gauge should be just under normal running position (quarter to half way on the gauge), running temp will vary around 90 - 95 degrees . Measuring the temperature is difficult, best way would be a temperature strip, otherwise paint or tape with black and use an infra red gauge. Assuming the temp is about 90 then get a sender unit that gets the gauge position where you like it to be, the lower the resistance the higher the gauge goes, you could even use a variable resistance to fine tune it!

Ok thanks, got one of those laser temp gauges the best thing since sliced bread seems very accurate and you can point it at loads of things like wiring connections to see if they are getting hot !!!!!!!!!!!! Am off to do a t/stat test with wife's cooker and saucepan to see when stat starts opening. Thanks for the temp readings will see what happens..

Hi all carried out some temp tests with a laser temp gauge and it seems that to get a normal temp position on the car dash gauge i.e. about 3 o'clock ( normal ) the engine temp needs to be about 105 deg C on the t/stat outlet elbow, this then creates a nice hot blow from the interior heater so now my next question is does any one know what the normal water operating temp is under normal conditions

thermostats have the temp on them, usually 88 or 92 degrees
