Removing Citroen roof bars.

Went to remove them and found they are secured by pentagonal drive 'Allen' type socket screws so I'll have to buy one. Possibly from Citroen dealer, but is there a special name for this type of key, as a google search doesn't give any useful result? TIA Mike.

ITYF they're hexagonal... and they're called... "Allen bolts"

Maybe not. I've seen pentagonal nuts on Peugeot brakes and pentagonal allen bolts on the local playground climbing frames. It's to stop them being stolen you see.

Actually the correct generic name for those is hexagon socket cap screws or bolts. :-) 'Allen' is to socket cap screws as Hoover is to vacuum cleaners. Maybe a Co with Allen in it's name was the first manufacturer to make them. I dunno.

Anyway the screws I can't undo definitely have 5 sided sockets. At a casual glance they look like ordinary hex socket screws. After I found none of my hex keys fitted, I looked more carefully and realised why. Mike.

I sit corrected.

Have you tried filing a corner off your allen keys?

You'd have to file all the corners off.

Nah, it'd just be a round rod then. No use at all.

Only if you rotate the file :-)

No. A lot of hassle but if I had to I could make a 5 sided key at work. I'll try a Citroen ealers parts dep't tomorrow. Mike.

Too big. I would guess the screws securing the bars are probably about 6mm. So the pentagon key would be about the same size as a 6mm a/f hex key. The screw is also at the bottom of a hole in a plastic 'end cap' which is about 8mm diameter, and 30mm deep. Thinking about it, the 'key' is probably a 'T' shaped one, as a conventional type key could only be used lengthways, which wouldn't give enough leverage without using a tubular extension on the short end. Mike.

Who'd want to steal a Peugeot brake?

Are you sure they are pentagonal? I removed the ones my Xantia came with a couple of months ago, and they were definitely normal allen bolts.
