Renault 19 - Central Locking - replacing IR receiver and plip

Hi

I have a renault 19 1995 - I have unfortunately lost the original "plip" which operated the remote central locking.

Has anyone any experience of replacing this ?

I have made enquiries and a spare parts dealer in the UK said that it is possible to order a new receiver (the unit in the roof of the car) together with the matching plip.

It is then a case of fitting a suitable cut spare key into the plip.

Basically, i am asking is this correct ?

If i buy the unit + plip (sold as a single unit) can i just unplug the reciever in the car and plug in the new one, and the supplied plip will work with this.

It seems logical enough as it is all based on a single IR code (which is available on the inside of the rough unit) that matches the code in the plip.

As a spare key cut works fine for ignition and locking and unlocking I don't believe the 1995 renault contains any fancy immobiliser or chip in key technology.

Anybody with any relevant advice or experience on any of the above ???

thanks in advance

What I found quite scary was if I point the plip at my remote (Philips Pronto) it will learn the plip!!!!

I have a button on my remote that will open and close all the doors :-O

Not that this was at all helpful to you, just thought you might be interested to know.

Oh and unless yours is different to mine, then no the 1995 Renault 19 doesn't have an imobiliser, well mine doesn't. It's a 1.9RT TD.

Thought the majority were RF rather than IR?

Definately IR on mine as my key has a IR led pocking out and where the buttons to the lectric sunroof are, you have the IR receiver.

Means you need line of sight for it to operate then?

Yep.

I dunno about Renault, but earlier remote locking was definitely IR not RF. Again, I know PSA best - mid/late 80s was all IR, with the sensor in CXs in the headlining. Early XMs (early 90s) were IR, RF came in with the Xant in around '93.

Utterly crap far too early on a really icy morning - the IR has no range through the layer of ice on the window, and the lock's frozen...

Earliest one I have I fitted to the SD1 in the '80s. Definitely RF, as were both my BMW ones. I'd say they both have pros and cons. But it would be easier to clone an IR one due to the easy availability of remotes to do precisely this.

Oh, absolutely. The PSA one is "coded" by the chip having certain pins connected, others disconnected.

You can also program a "universal" remote control to do the job. From a longer range.

Like I said in my original post, My Philips Pronto has a specific button for working the central locking and the range on that is great. For starters it has 4 IR Leds at slightly different angles........

Was a bit concerned about security but to be fair who's gonna be around witha universal remote to capture codes in this day and age?

More to the point, who'd wanna nick an R19? They're more likely to leave you another one...

How close can you be!!!!! the Montego just had it's rear window broken..........

Get the chain through, to winch it onto the back of a pikey flatbed?

As much as i like the pikey flatbed comment ;) my reasons for wanting to restore the central locking are down more to to not wanting to have to return to the driver side to lock all the doors when passengers get out and assume central locking !!!

- just wondering if anyone has an answer to the original question ? What i intend to do is purchase a new IR Receiver and Plip for £40 - is it as simple as disconnecting the old IR receiver and plugging in the new one ?

Wondering has anybody done this ?

cheers

I have on the Clio, which is very similar to the 19. and yes, it is a case of removing old one and sliding in the new one. It is a simple push fit.
