Renault Immobiliser- can you bypass it??

1998 Renault Megane Scenic with IR C/L & immobiliser combined.

The sensor (upper lighting panel, in front of sunroof) has packed up which means that I can't disarm the immobiliser and so can't start the engine (obviously!). Does anyone know of a work-around to bypass the immobilser until I can get a replacement circuit board from the dealer?

Any ideas welcomed at this point.........the lack of car is causing untold dramas in the household!!

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate CK, managed to produce the following words of wisdom

Your local immobiliser specialist should be able to cure this. There is a special box available that over-rides the immobiliser on some Meganes, but it'll cost you around £130 fitted. This is a hell of a lot cheaper than the proper Renault immobiliser circuit costs to replace.

I know people who've scrapped otherwise perfectly good Meganes because of immobiliser faults.

The part I require is currently on order form Renault, at a total cost of =A361. If that doesn't work , it'll be down to the keys at a cost of =A3120 each to replace and re-prog.

Take it there's no way to manually disarm the system then?

If there was, I would hope it wasn't public knowledge... ;)

If there was a switch marked "disarm immobiliser", you'd be shouting about the total lack of security.

But my Alfa has a way of starting the car in the event that the key is unable to transmit a signal to the immobiliser - it involves entering magic numbers into the system via repeated pressing on the accelerator pedal.

Thanks for all those pearls of wisdom. I realise that you wouldn't want to be shouting about the ability to bypass the immobiliser, but on my old Rover you could enter a code by the number of turns of the key in the door lock and this would disarm the system. Just wondered if there was a similar thing on the Renault.

Out of interest, how much did it cost? My MIL has a megane with a similar problem - won't unlock, start etc. Renault have told her the computer need replacing - £500.
