Renault Megane aircon problem

The aircon on my Megane 1.8DCi has stopped working. The light on the switch still comes on and the normal air-circulating fan still works but there's no cooling effect and the tell-tale slight lowering of engine speed doesn't happen.

On the basis of starting with the obvious, I looked for the aircon fuse. It isn't where the manual says it is (i.e. in the compartment just under the steering wheel) and I can't find it anywhere else.

Can someone tell me where it actually is. With any luck that might be all I need to do??

Thanks, Nigel.

Many air-con compressors simply don't engage when the ambient temperature is below something like 3-4 degrees; my old Peugeot used to do that. It's been very cold recently; could that be the reason?

Alternatively, it could be the fuse if you can find it.

That would be my first guess too. Mine didn't work tonight but it has also leaked a bit of the coolant from the compressor. So another thing is gas pressure.

No that's not the reason - it stopped working in the summer and I've only just got round to thinking about it !!

On the basis of your later post where you said it happened in the summer, the most likely cause is the refrigerant level is low. When this happens safety devices prevent the compressor engaging. Take it to a AC specialist

- most will check the pressure and therefore level for free. Costs usually about 70 quid to have it topped up.

Cheers for that. I'll take it along to one. I just assumed that as it worked fine one day and then not the next that it wasn't a gradual thing.
