Replacing Astra thermostat

Hi

I want to replace the thermostat on a W-reg 1.6 8V Astra. A Google search suggests the cambelt has to come off to get access. Is this really the only way or can it be done without this? (I've seen different posts saying both.)

I've never done a cambelt (but have done thermostats and various small jobs). Is it tricky (with manual)? would I need any special tools?

Many thanks,

Steve

The cam belt needs to come off and unless nearly new, then replace the cambelt at the same time as the thermostat. No very special tools are needed, but you will need the info on cam timing (workshop manual) unless you are very knowledgeable, in which case you wouldn't be asking! Do not guess at the timing or you will do damage.

Actually, you might be in luck as some astras have the thermostat at the front, look at the top hose connection to the engine, if the alloy part on the engine is one piece, then the thermostat is behind the housing on the end of then engine, behind the cambelt. if it is in two bits with the rad. end secured by three bolts then the thermostat is just below the three bolts, beware since they snap off easily.

What a silly place to put a thermostat. Good Luck !!!

Depends on the model. The 1.2 is easy(ish) as it lives inside the top hose somewhere I think (never worked on one but was assured it was there)

The 1.3 and 1.4 had it behind the cambelt backplate as you say - the most stupid place for a stat I've never seen. If you look at the sides of the cover you can see the backplate - if there is a notch then the backplate has a cutout. I don't know when this changed - later models had a solid plate.

The 1.6,1.8 and 2.0 litres all had it on a housing on the end of the radiator top hose AFAICR and obviously that's a 3 bolt and remove the housing, no need even to undo the hose clip.
