Reverse sensor alarm sounding permanently - Citroen C5

Hi,

A friend of mine bought six months ago a second-hand (2002) Citroen C5 estate - it's a looooong car. The car came fitted with bumper- fitted reverse sensors that worked well, frequency of beep increasing as approached on obstacle to continuous tone at about, oooh, 20cm from "impact". This device has been a god-send to her parking this hearse- like machine - and believe me she is a very experienced, precise, capable driver.

In the past couple of weeks, the alarm comes on continuously when reverse is engaged, when there are no obstructions near the rear bumper. Is this a common fault that can be easily rectified? She doesn't want to go to some cowboy who will rip her off for hundreds of pounds for a trivial repair or replacement (as is true for any of us for any car-related repair).

Thanks,

Clive

The sensors need to be kept clean, a build up of road dirt confuses them, if that doesn't fix it then you can disconnect each one in turn to identify the culprit. May be cheapest just to buy a new kit complete and easier than finding an individual sensor (unless they are original equipment type)

Two possible issues may cause this:

  1. If he has used a pressure washer, then he may have accidentally pushed the sensor into the bumper by the force of the jet.

  1. Wax, "back-to-black" sprays and other chemicals may have coated one or all of the sensors resulting in the ultrasonics giving false readings.
