Rover 620i

Went out today and tried to start the car, rover 620i-petrol all it will do is click, changed battery and starter motor but still wont start or turn over just clicks like the starters not throwing in but the one i got is brand new.

Is there something which may be preventing it from starting?L-plate 1994 if it helps,no immobilzer that i'm aware off. Cam belt all in tact so at a bit of a loss.

Earth strap from chassis to engine block snapped?

You could try jump leads direct from battery to starter...

Watch out for them welding themselves to things though!

Actually direct to the terminals on the starter motor? If thats the case then the starter must be jammed (or duff).

Broken cable to the starter motor? They can fracture internally.

Pull the plugs and check you don't have a cylinder full of water from a blown head or inlet manifold gasket

I hate to sound depressing but I had a 214 which blew a head gasket. Speaking to a mechanic, he said it was a common problem with those engines (he did one car 4 times!), not sure if the 620 is the same series engine but it was a 'K' year reg car I had.

Well at least it isn't like the Rover down our road a week or so back.

Saw him trying to start it for a while with no luck, so I wandered over (to gloat? you decide ;-) )

It was turning over but making no attempt to fire, and there was a strange dull thunk at about 2Hz.

Turned out the belt had gone and the thunk was a piston banging into it's valves. :-(

Well looks like the head gasket has gone, lost water and oil is a greyish colour with a hint of mayo on the oil filler cap. What are these like to do?

Only one way to find out. It's a jap engine so it won't be too bad.

It isn't. They saw common sense and fitted a Honda unit.

K reg 214's were Japanese engines

Not sure as I had the 1.4 litre version. Make sure that you get the very latest gasket set, (seven revisions of the head on the 214 for example!) get the Haynes manual, get a cambelt and tensioner and waterpump if you feel really generous and get to it. The only tricky think is the timing mark is under the crank pulley so that has to come off but it's relatively easy. About four hours on the roadside to do mine.

Utterly dead battery - if it's dead you won't be able to jump start with another battery.

That won't neccessarily be any good, as the ignition system needs at least

*some* voltage there to power the low tension (LT) circuit - just putting a decent amount of power to the starter is only part of the picture. Take the old battery out, and properly replace it with a good one. Then try.
