rustproofing in north-west

Anyone recommend someone to rustproof and underseal a Mk1 Eunos Roadster? I'm in Handforth. Sills, cavities, underseal etc. I've come across Chassisclean in Altrincham who look great and very very thorough, but want =A3350 to do the car, which is stretching my budget...

I've considered doing it myself but mess/lack of ramps or compressor etc is putting me off. I'd also like the peace of mind that someone who knows what they're doing carried the job out...!

if it is a properly done job then 350 is cheap

£350 seems reasonable for the area. A place in my end of the world charges £250 just to do undersealing/cavities etc. They do one car at a time and it takes a full day.

I'm coming to the conclusion you're right. The place in question gets rave reviews and having spoken to the guy who runs it, it's a 3 day process including steam cleaning, baking dry and application. Think it's a fair price: but will have to wait a while to budget for it. Tempted to get a quick once-over with Waxoyl (local specialists charge about 70 quid for a blast over underside and in cavities) to tide me over in the meantime whilst the gritters are still out...

Any particular reason? Eunos have decent rust protection from the factory. It's a myth that they don't....

Of course, you may just want it for your peace of mind and know that already, I just wanted to dispel the myth. It's quite common for people to have heard that Eunoses have no rust protection because Japanese roads have no salt, or some such nonsense. The MK1 cars were made on the same line to pretty much the same spec as the UK cars, including rustproofing. It's just that many of them were imported to the UK later in their life, so have no rot on them as they weren't exposed to the salt. The rust protection is no different to a UK car though. I was in the MX-5 0C and had both a Eunos and a UK MX-5..

Indeed. Wife has a FTO that had no UK market equivalent so didn't have any rusproofing to speak of. As a result, many are as rotten as a dog underneath.

I'm quite aware of Eunos vs MX5 difference - there's no difference in factory underseal, the jap ones tend to be better condition because they use volcanic ash on the roads rather than salt over there. The factory rust proofing is the same on both models: they come out of the same factory,as pointed out above. Problem is, all MX5/Miata/Eunos models have some areas sensitive to rot: the sills, the front wing behind the arch liner, and the rear wing behind the door shut panel. It's a really common problem on the Mk1 and, to a lesser extent, the Mk2. This definitely wants treating and whilst I'm at it a squirt over on the underside seems like a good idea too.

Having looked into it, I'm tempted to Dinitrol it myself - you can get a small car kit containing the rust treatment spray, cavity wax and underbody wax in aerosol form for abotu 60 quid with wand applicator etc. Just need to find somewhere convenient to lift the car for a day whilst I pressure wash/dry/treat it.

Anyone know somewhere you can rent a bay with a lift or a pit by the day in the North-West?

She sills rot from the inside due to the drain holes getting blocked.

The drain holes are in the raised part of the seam that tells you where the jack goes. They need clearing which a small screwdriver. You can use the holes to apply waxol/wd40/spray grease directly into the sill via the little plastic pipe you always lose.

There are also two rubber pipes that go from behind the seatbelt mounts to under the car. These drain water from the hood. When they get blocked water overflows into the sills. You can clear them out with the outer brake cable from a bicycle.

Who ever you get to do the job, my 2p would be DO NOT use waxoyl- its rubbish. Dinitrol all the way. Yes it is expensive, but you get what you pay for.
