Scenic Dci losing oil

51 plate Scenic 1.9Dci was serviced in Sept 2004 for it's 36000 mile check. I Feb 2005 the low oil warning light came on and when IO checked, the oil level was at the bottom of the dip stick.

Returned car to dealer, who suspected the oil may have been under filled at the last service, so topped it up.

Since then it has lost another .5 Litre. Been back to dealer who says it's not leaking oil and can't see anything obviously wrong.

I have looked in the air filter housing and it's clean & dry. There is no visible smoke from the exhaust and car runs fine. It has also passed an MOT emission check.

The dealer wants me to book the car in for a day so they can investigate, but I am reluctant to do this, losing confidence in their ability.

anyone got any suggestions as to where my oil is going?

The engines done 40000. Only 1000 miles between the last top up and this which was .5L of oil. The dealer uses 0W40 synthetic oil

The oil was replaced in September 2004 during a service and the oil light came on in February 2005 around six months later, surely you must have checked it on several occasions sometime in between?

So it's a newish car, with the engine still running in, and you only check it every 5 months or so. Checking oil takes 1 bloody minute - you should be doing basic checks regularly on any car.

That could be the case, or it could have burned oil - diesels particularly burn oil, and particularly when running in. If it wasn't driven correctly when new, then it might never have been run in properly and may burn oil from now til kingdom come. If the dealer isn't aware that burning oil is even a possibility, then they're complete muppets. Take it somewhere else to get serviced.

They're a complete and utter clueless bunch of fuckwits then.

Either my previous comment stands, or they're just plain and simple trying to rip you off.

Yes. It's getting burned off. Look in the handbook. It will state that it's normal to consume oil - it should specify an amount per thousand miles or similar.

Also, owning a car is a responsibility to yourself, and everyone else that uses the roads and surrouning footpaths etc. Doing basic regular checks (not just oil, but tyre pressures, coolant, etc.) is part of owning a car. If you can't be bothered to do these then you shouldn't be driving.

Is this car new to you , or have you done all the miles. If the latter then do we read it as the car has suddenly. ie. after the 36k service, started loosing oil?

If its always been loosing oil then i suspect it was never driven hard enough whilst running in, and you have somewhat slightly glazed bores the rings are not able to seal against, and its burning the oil, this is especially the case where the first fill is a synthetic.

It would be worth finding a nice long steepish hill and going up it several times like your house is on fire- full power and full revs through the gears and seeing if that helps.

I've had the car since 30000 miles so it could be a glazed bore problem, but I didn't notice any oil loss between 30000 when I bought it and

34500 when I had it serviced. It does get thrashed occasionally now and this hasn't helped.

I have returned the car to the dealer for investigation. They have agreed that if any serious work needs doing then they will try to get Renault to extend the warranty to cover it.

If this is the problem then I will do as you suggest. I am just slightly concerned that it takes a few weeks no identify the oil loss each time, which of course takes the car further out of the warranty period. So I want the investigation now to cover myself if something catastrophic happens in 6 months time.

How does it take a few weeks to identify the oil loss each time? If you check the oil regularly any losses should be immediately apparent each time you check it.

Because I'm not using it very much at the moment. Only once or twice each week or 100 miles or so. This will change again shortly when I will be doing more long journeys again.

Russel,

you've really got no excuse for not knowing the oil level.

You get the chance to 'see' the oil level every time you start the engine on every modern Renault. That funny display that replaces the mileage is the electronic oil level each 0 means there is oil each _ means there is none so full should look like: 000000 and half full 000___ etc. It resets back to the mileage after about 20 seconds or so.

Thanks, I know that and check it every time I use it now. But it still takes a couple of weeks for the first _ to appear at the moment due to my low usage.

So go for a few long fast drives, it's in your interest in the long term, and good for the car. BTW, thin synthetic oil does go fast in a car that is underused. If you are low mileage, a good quality dino oil is better.
