Smoking Kangoo

I have an 03 reg diesel Kangoo van, 57,000 mile on the clock. On the door panel its described as 1.7DCi, the plastic cowling over the engine reads 1.5 DCi and the logbook reads 1465cc.

Passed MOT in January, but now its started smoking. No change in performance, no starting problems, no sign of overheating. The smoke is greyish.

How much it smokes varies. It clears when the engine oil level is low, when topped up it starts again.

Mileage is only around 8,000 pa most of which is stop start traffic, rarely gets a decent run.

Tried Wynns Smoke treatment in the oil & a Redex product in the fuel, they don't seem to make much difference. Stopped using Morrissons diesel & switched to Esso.

Any ideas on what this could be? Someone suggested a blocked oil way or something - sorry my knowledge of engines, especially diesels is almost zero.

is it being overfilled with oil in the first place? the fact that it goes down means it is being burnt or is falling out, but oil smoke is usually blue,

grey smoke is usually unburnt diesel and there is a common kangoo fault which is the pump advance solenoid which when it doesn't work makes them smoke a bit since there isn't enough time to burn all the fuel which is injected. 300 quid will get a new one

Oh dear, let the Police examine it to find out if it is a stolen vehicle or a cut and shut. Why does it have the wrong panel on the door? Do any of the numbers match up?

It's burning oil.

You might have the wrong dipstick! So filling it too much and causing the smoke. When the level drops the engine is happy again.

Just give it a long run and thrash it from time to time to clear it out.

Wynns smoke treatment is useless and REDEX - well don't even put that near your engine or fuel. It will make no difference apart from causing more smoke. Morrisons diesel is OK, it's only Tesco diesel I would avoid as my car regularly returns 15-20mpg LESS compared to SHELL diesel. I have tried this a few times with and without so-called additives.

I think you have too much oil in it or some of the breather pipes are blocked. Possibly your air filter is filthy. All very basic things to check. You're best avoid additives as they sometimes cause more harm than good. Another thing to avoid is expensive boxes that promis more power by squirting in loads more diesel. They multiply the signal from the ECU and raise the diesel pressure which wears out the pump and causes smoke.

I would check your vehicles identity before doing anything else.

sometimes people put on secondhand doors when they get a dent, since the mot went ok the vin numbers probably match the reg. number.

Could you possibly talk through your arse any louder? I don't think the people at the back of the group heard you.

Possibly, the handbook lists 8 varients from 1 ltr to 1.9 ltr with oil capacities from 3 to 5 litres. The smoke is 'greyish blue' :-)

Sorry, not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but would that not affect performance?

If it was overfilled by 2 ltres then its likely to damage the engine

Wrong dipstick or the dipstick tubes wrong. Or you've got an expensive problem, but check those two 1st.

Not a great deal, unless you drive it flat out and loaded most of the time a few degrees retarded will not make much difference to power output. First thing you should do is to change the oil and filter and put in the right amount only for your engine size. The 1.5 dci needs 10/40 semi synthetic (for diesel) and exactly 5 litres of oil. Run that and after it has settled for 5 minutes check what level shows on the dipstick, parked on level ground. If it still smokes after a good thrash to clear it out then you may need to get a diesel specialist to have a look.
