Solenoid type click

'98 Megane 1.6.

Ok, washed car on Sunday (only mention it as this "problem" didn't exist before then). Went out to car on Monday morning and started the car. Immediately heard a rapid clicking noise like you use to get from a solenoid.

It's electrical rather than mechanical - clicking starts when ignition turned on to "dash lights" position.

Clicking stops after about 20 seconds but becomes more rapid if engine is running - still stops after 20secs.

Have tracked it down to behind the bulkhead in the engine bay on the passenger side, it seems to be behind the air intake for the heater.

It hasn't affected the car, running and performance are as before.

Anyone any idea's as to what may be in this area to create this noise.

TIA

If it was a Focus, I'd say it's the fresh air/recirc motor stripping its gears. Assuming the Megane has that system, it might be worth disconnecting the recirc motor as a first step?

Hah! give that man a virtual pint. Thanks Chris, just pull the fuse for it and confirmed your diagnosis.

Now, can I whack it with a hammer...............................;)

That should fix it good and proper.

I'm more of a Chateauneuf Du Pape sort of person, really...

Of course.

More usefully, on a car of that age, I would unplug it and hope it stays in the fresh air position.

I'll leave the fuse out for now (easiest option) and decide what to do long term another day.

Thanks again Chris.
